Inver Grove Heights may implement fee for disc golf course

Inver Grove Heights may implement fee for disc golf course

Flinging discs at North Valley Park in Inver Grove Heights soon could come at a cost. The city council on Monday will consider entering into an agreement with a vendor that would collect a user fee for the park's disc golf course. The switch to pay-per-play — a rarity in disc golf — would give the city a yet-unknown amount of revenue for maintaining and making improvements to the course, city officials say. Last year, the city asked users to voluntarily pay to play the 18-hole course miniature golf content, which opened in the early 1990s. Annual $30 passes were available either online or at the community center, but many players either ignored the fee or weren't aware of it, said Tracy Petersen, the recreation supervisor for the city's parks and recreation department. "It was difficult, because we didn't have staff down there to monitor the park and enforce (the fee)," she said. The city in recent years had discussed implementing a daily fee but always ditched the idea after considering the cost of staff time needed to collect it, she said. The one-year agreement between Inver Grove Heights and Fairway Flyerz is similar to the one neighboring South St. Paul entered into with the Little Canada disc golf retailer this week. Fairway Flyerz staff would sell annual and daily passes, disc golf accessories and snacks in a temporary building at North Valley seven days a week. The retailer would keep all revenue generated from its on-site retail sales Is Your Golf Swing Training Aids True.

Magazine: Verti-Drain makes light work of de-compacting 27 holes

A fleet of Charterhouse Verti-Drains are helping Mirfield, Yorkshire contractor Alan Chappelow return golf courses to optimum condition while keeping the members happy. Alan, whose company, Alan Chappelow Sports Ground Contractor Ltd serves golf and sports ground customers all over the country, has more than 20 years experience in the industry, which he puts to good use in getting the best out of machinery. "We have four Verti-Drains in total, two heavy duty 7626 models, a 2.6m working width 7526 and a smaller 7316, which comes into its own on greens and tees miniature golf content. We can use the three bigger machines together to give golf courses the best de-compaction service in the very short time window open to them." At Moor Allerton Golf Course in Leeds, head greenkeeper Marcus Oakey was delighted when Alan and his team - his two sons also work in the business - were able to Verti-Drain 27 holes in three days. "It can take weeks to do that big a job, but golf club members don't appreciate the course being out of play, so word has quickly got round and we have been approached by other clubs to do the same for them. They like the idea of such an efficient service," says Alan. The Verti-Drain also offers the advantage of being able to work at full depth of 40cm, and at maximum heave, giving highly effective de-compaction. "And yet there is no surface disruption - Moor Allerton Golf Club were very impressed with the finish," says Alan. "There are faster machines on the market, but they just cannot work to this depth, which is essential on the clay and stone. The work at Moor Allerton was completed in the autumn, and gave the course an excellent preparation for the hard winter that followed Choi Donated $100,000 to Japan Earthquake."

Jon Schmidt — Monkey junkie

Jon Schmidt — Monkey junkie

While Senior Management Major Jon Schmidt has been predominantly involved on campus in his previous three years and one semester at Gustavus, his participation and presence here this semester has been largely abated.Among Jon’s activities at Gustavus, he has played basketball, club volleyball, club ultimate Frisbee, co-founded the Gustavus Disc Golf Club, played drums in the Proclaim band, acted in a one-act play last spring, went to India on the Social Justice Peace and Development trip and, as of last year, has been devoted to ceramics and making pottery to sell crazy golf . “I enjoy how Gustavus gives you the chance to do so many different things,” Jon said. “I have done a lot of different and unique things at Gustavus athletically, musically, artsy and studying abroad.”Jon’s friends have characterized him as passionate, hardworking, friendly and thoughtful, and that passion has recently led to another new endeavor—owning a business. “My mom took me through this coffee shop, Mocha Monkey, to show me the pottery after I had given her a piece of pottery for Mother’s Day. I really liked the atmosphere and thought it would be cool to one day own a place like this and do pottery. I got a job there in July to learn more about it, and eventually, found out from the previous owners that they were looking to sell,” Jon said. “It went from there, and I eventually took over sole ownership on Jan. 1, 2011.”In fact, Jon even credits his semester-long study abroad in India, which was the “highlight of his life,” as the beginning stages of wanting to own a restaurant. “I had an idea for an Indian fast casual restaurant. I wrote a business plan in India and rewrote it in more detail in my entrepreneurship class. Then, I got super into pottery and wanted to combine my passion for pottery, interest in the restaurant industry and being socially just and environmentally sustainable,” Jon said.Jon sells his own ceramics at his store Mocha Monkey. Lindsay Lelivelt.Jon’s girlfriend and Art Education Major Elise Biewen has observed this zealous and almost obsessive personality trait. “Whenever he puts his mind to something, he gets it done Choi Donated $100,000 to Japan Earthquake. He has been passionate about so many things from drums and guitar to basketball, golf, football and volleyball, to wakeboarding and snowboarding, to ceramics and now Mocha Monkey,” Biewen said. “He puts everything he has into that one activity and can’t stop thinking about it when he is not doing it.”Due to Jon’s involvement with Mocha Monkey, he is currently a part-time student with a reduced load of classes, including a Productions and Operations Management course by arrangement with Assistant Professor of Economics and Management Kristian Braekkan. Jon sees his education as not only a quest for a diploma, but as a part of a learning experience that will continue when he leaves Gustavus,” Braekkan said. “Being a small business owner, Jon is exceptionally motivated to soak in as much learning as he can while in college and is balancing many obligations during his senior year.”

It was the second course the alliance created in Bucks County Is Tiger Woods an Ordinary Golfer. The first was at Tinicum Park in 1991.Before the course was built, “this was a really desolate area of the park,” alliance member Scott Murray explained. We cleaned it all up,” Hay said, adding that the alliance has a very good relationship with the park. “We take real good care of the park,” he said. The area around the course is “just as clean as a whistle.”Alliance members always pick up the trash and cigarette butts that they see littered around the course. They also helped raise money to build the pavilion adjacent to the course. Now, Tyler Park “is one of the top courses on the Eastern seaboard,” Hay said. Not only is the course challenging, it’s also scenic with plenty of wildlife around, including fox and hawks. Not to mention, you get a great workout playing at Tyler Park.   “You’re up and down the hills,” he said. And in the summer, the shady trees create the perfect environment for outdoor exercise. “Even when it's hot, it’s cool in the woods.”The sport appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds, Hay said.
